Java and JavaScript are two popular programming languages that often cause confusion due to their similar names. While they share a few similarities, they are distinct languages with different purposes, syntax, and areas of application. We explore the key differences between Java and JavaScript to help clarify any misconceptions.

1. Purpose and Origin

Java: Java is a general-purpose, object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems (now owned by Oracle) in the mid-1990s. It was designed to be platform-independent and used for building enterprise-level applications, desktop software, developing server-side applications, Android mobile apps, and more.

JavaScript: JavaScript, on the other hand, is a dynamic, lightweight scripting language created by Brendan Eich at Netscape in 1995. Initially named LiveScript, it was later renamed JavaScript to leverage the popularity of Java. JavaScript was primarily developed for web browsers to add interactivity and dynamic behaviour to web pages. It is mainly used for client-side scripting, enabling web developers to create interactive web elements and perform client-side validations.

 2. Execution Environment

Java: Java applications are compiled into bytecode, which is executed by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This means that Java code can run on any system with a compatible JVM, making it platform-independent. Java is often used for building standalone applications, web servers, Android apps, and enterprise systems.

JavaScript: JavaScript is primarily executed within web browsers. Every modern web browser comes with a built-in JavaScript engine, such as V8 in Chrome or SpiderMonkey in Firefox, which interprets and executes JavaScript code directly. JavaScript does not require explicit type declarations, and variables can be declared using the “var,” “let,” or “const” keywords. JavaScript uses functions as a primary building block and supports prototypal inheritance.

Java: Java is a fully object-oriented programming language, following the class-based inheritance model. It supports concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. Java uses the “new” keyword to create instances of classes and provides access modifiers like “public,” “private,” and “protected” to control access to class members.

JavaScript: JavaScript is also an object-oriented language but takes a different approach. It is based on a prototype-based inheritance model, where objects can inherit properties and methods directly from other objects. JavaScript allows objects to be created without explicitly defining classes. Instead, objects can be created using object literals or constructor functions.
